How did they do it?

That's the million-dollar question. We are wrapping up July with over 60 IT professionals from Latin America working with remote-ok tech companies from the U.S. and Canada. You can check out our Q2 hires here. We are summing up the best advice they shared with us and categorizing it using stages of the hiring process and personal motivations. So without further ado, let's dive in!

  Scratching the itch

For some of our recent hires, it was their first experience working remotely with colleagues from around the world in an all-English environment. Their journey started with an idea, and curiosity made them hit that apply button. Best practice: Curiosity is not killing any cats here! Browse, explore, and apply. Even if you are currently working, it's a great practice to see the state of the IT market internationally. Listen to Germán's advice, and don't let imposter syndrome get the best of you!

  Finding the right opportunity

And let the right opportunity find you. Most candidates apply, but some are scouted. That's why it's essential to look at both angles always. Take the time to figure out what you like and where you stand out. Best practice: Remember to take care of all the public touch points a hiring manager or recruiter may have with your profile:

  • Is your GitHub updated with your most recent projects?

  • How about LinkedIn? Do you have a concise title that tells others who you are? (For example, Matías Roca | Full Stack Engineer | Bilingual SP/ENG | Remote Enthusiast)

  • Have your tried Googleing your name?

  • Do you have any other public social media available? Take advantage of the URL option to share your portfolio or LinkedIn page in your profile.

  Acing the hiring process

Your CV is what gets you in the process, but your interviews are what seal the deal. Our hires of 2022 had an easy-to-skim CV that listed their tech stack and how they used it to achieve valuable results. Most IT professionals list their tech stack but dismiss the outcome; that's a big mistake.

The interview process is where the candidates will show off any other skills unclear on their CV: soft skills and language level. All of our hires had a "click" moment with the hiring company. When asked how this happened, they sum it up into 3 points:

  1. "I came prepared. I knew the company's mission and work culture."

  2. "Because I was prepared, it was easier for me to relax and make my soft skills shine through: my communication skills, leadership skills, organizational skills, and so on."

  3. "At the end of the interview, I asked questions and ended it with What are the next steps in the process?. It showed initiative and genuine interest."

  Bonus thoughts

"As long as you can communicate your message effectively, you do not need to speak perfect English, let alone avoid applying for job opportunities because of it." Matheus Lohn, Full Stack Engineer from Brazil."Find something you are passionate about and be consistent with your education. Working remotely gets you out of your comfort zone, but you will learn from the best talent from all over the world." (Bruno Gonzalez, Data Engineer Manager from Uruguay).
