Are you making the most impact in less than 10 seconds?

According to this study, the average time a recruiter spends reading a CV is between 6 to 8 seconds.

This process is called skimming, which intends to read something quickly to note only the most important points. If you have a structured and job-tailored CV, this works in your favor. So how can you make your experience impactful in that small time slot? Let's dive in!

  1. Use visual aids to create a pleasant flow.

Today we will only focus on the experience portion of your CV. Usually, we tend to overstuff that area, but more doesn't necessarily mean better.

First things first, ask yourself, "Is it easy to follow along?". If the answer is no, then it's time to get to work:

  • Font sizes: Use a bigger size for your header, where you'll write the job title, company, and time period. Make it stand out by using the bold option.

  • Spacing: Separate each experience by using spaces. It should be clear, visually, when one experience ends and when the next one starts.

  • Bullet points: For detailed actions you did at your job (we'll cover how to write them effectively in point #3).

  • Bold words: For the header and if there is a number or particular action you would want to highlight.

  • Order: Always place your experience in reverse chronological order.

  2. Maximize your contribution to the company in 2 sentences.

Most of us coordinate, delegate, organize and lead at our jobs. While those action verbs are VERY important, they need to come with context and outcome. Answer these questions as a guide:

  • What did I do? (here comes your action verb)

  • Who was involved? (sales teams, dev teams, etc.)

  • What was the result? (if you have numbers, now its time to use them)

The example below shows how to write an effective action in one single sentence.

Each sentence should be a bullet point, and preferably you should stay between 3 to 5 bullet points per experience. Make sure that each experience contains a keyword relevant to the job description. Don't waste space naming actions irrelevant to the job you are applying for. Additional advice: If you are applying for international roles, like the one we have at TECLA, include a small sentence just below your job title and company name explaining what that company is all about (include a hyperlink to the website also). Don't assume the recruiter knows every company out there.

  3. Use our CV builder.

Your time is valuable, and doing CVs repeatedly is very consuming. That's why at TECLA, we have an online CV builder where you can easily fill in the blanks (with today's tips) and download it as a pdf. You can access this feature by joining our platform.
