What hasn't been written about leadership? 

  You name it: seminars, books, guides, presentations, TED Talks. It's a powerful word that most of us work towards.  

  Leaders are made empirically 

Leadership, as a personal quality, requires feedback and empathy, therefore needs to be tested in the real world, with a real team. You can say you are a good leader, but if your team disagrees, then something is not working. You need to walk the walk, constantly stopping by to ask for new directions. This is called ownership or accountability, and it's not just for senior/leadership roles. Demonstrate this soft skill daily at work with these simple actions: 

  • Propose new ideas for the project you are working on, ways to connect more with your team, structure your schedule, and so on. Fresh ideas equal self-motivation. 

  • If one of those ideas gets picked up, then ask to be the owner: pitch it to the team on the weekly roundup or upload a video explaining the process. Provide evidence that you are walking the walk. 

  • Don't lie or blame someone else. If you make a mistake, take responsibility, and explain what happened and what you can learn from it

  Get "no" out of your vocabulary

This doesn't mean, by any means, that you should accept tasks and challenges 

  • When a new priority comes, and you don't have the bandwidth to finish it that day, instead of saying, "I don't have time," try: "This is what my schedule looks like at the moment, is there a task we can save for tomorrow so I can focus on this new priority? Let me suggest this XYZ task." 

  • When they ask you to present something at the last moment, but you are not confident in the subject, instead of saying, "Can you ask someone else?" try: "I am not confident in the subject (awareness of limitation is not a weakness!), but I'm sure if you have notes on the subject and I can talk with X and Y (people involved in the project) I can do a concise sum-up." 

  Develop a learning mindset

  • If you have enrolled in a new course, tell your manager about it and add the motivation behind your choice. This will demonstrate eagerness for a career path and openness to new challenges

  • Make sure to ask your team how they did something you think it's cool. Besides showing interest in others' work, you can learn a new ability or trick. 

  • Help your team when they are stuck. They say helping others is learning something twice. 

A learning mindset can also quickly become your strongest asset to build your influence
